Your Camping Guide
Where Can You Sleep When Wild Camping?
Wild camping rules vary by country. In places like Canada or parts of the USA (BLM land), it’s often legal. In Europe, it can be more restricted, especially in national parks or private land.
If you’re traveling low-cost, apps like iOverlander II, Park4Night, or FreeRoam will quickly become your best friend when searching for safe and legal places to sleep.
Always choose your camping spot carefully. Avoid private property, respect nature, and make sure you’re not breaking local regulations. Safety and responsibility should always come first.
Tested and recommended across Mexico, Central and North America
I highly recommend iOverlander II, as it was an invaluable companion throughout our travels across North and Central America. Thanks to this app, we discovered countless beautiful places to stay overnight. Some of them came with stunning views, while others were simply practical spots where we could sleep for free. You can easily download this app on your App Store or Google Play.
Car camping doesn’t mean you can sleep absolutely anywhere. Choosing the right place to stay overnight is essential—not only for your safety, but also to respect local laws and regulations. This is especially important when visiting national parks, where overnight parking and camping rules are often strictly enforced.
If you’re traveling on a low budget, iOverlander II will quickly become your best friend. This app helps you find verified places to sleep—from free camping spots and parking areas to campsites, rest areas, and even places with showers. It’s one of the most useful tools for anyone doing a road trip or planning to sleep in their car.
On many occasions, the app also helped us find affordable showers—and sometimes even free ones, which felt like a small luxury on the road.
The app was also incredibly helpful when it came to finding activities. Thanks to it, we discovered places we would have never thought to visit—many of which aren’t even marked on Google Maps. There was even a moment in Mexico when locals asked us how we had found a particular spot, as they didn’t know about it themselves.
The app is for free to use and operates on a voluntary contribution basis. Alternatively, you can purchase a subscription, which unlocks additional features beyond the basic version. This app is very convenient for your low cost travelling.
Wild camping is one of the best ways to travel low-cost and experience true freedom. On iOverlander II, I’ve also found several spots across Europe, but I haven’t personally tested them yet. If anyone has experience, I’d really appreciate your feedback — otherwise, I’ll definitely update this in the future.
We’ll soon be testing which apps work best in Australia, and I’ll keep you posted. From what I’ve heard, WikiCamps works great there, and CamperMate is also highly recommended — especially in New Zealand.
